India is a very important friend of Bangladesh: Sheikh Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Dhaka and New Delhi have agreed on a joint vision for digital and green partnership to ensure a sustainable future for Bangladesh and India.

She said that both the countries have endorsed the 'Vision Statement' for a peaceful and prosperous future. We agreed on a joint vision for the 'Digital Partnership' and Green Partnership for a Sustainable Future.

Sheikh Hasina made this comment in a joint statement to the media after a bilateral meeting with Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Saturday (June 22).

Describing India as Bangladesh's main neighbor, trusted friend and regional partner, Sheikh Hasina said, Bangladesh greatly values the relationship with India that started during our liberation war in 1971.

She also said that Bangladesh-India relations are continuously growing. We had a very productive meeting today where we discussed politics and security, trade connectivity, water sharing from common rivers, power and regional and multilateral cooperation among other issues of mutual interest, she said.

The Prime Minister said, we have agreed to cooperate with each other for the betterment of our people and country. Since Dhaka and Delhi have started a new journey. She said both sides maintained high-level relations, including at the highest level.

She further said that as Dhaka and Delhi embarked on a new journey, both countries have charted future course of action to ensure a Smart Bangladesh following Vision 2041 and Developed India 2047.

Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh and India have agreed to have a common vision for 'Digital Partnership' and 'Green Partnership for Sustainable Future'.

The Prime Minister said that this is her first bilateral visit to any country after the 12th National Parliament elections of Bangladesh and the formation of her new government in January this year.

She recalled Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh in 2021, followed by her visit to India in September 2022 and her last bilateral visit to New Delhi.

Noting that she joined other world leaders at Prime Minister Modi's swearing-in ceremony earlier this month (June 9), Sheikh Hasina said, "I am visiting New Delhi for an unprecedented second time in the same month (June 2024).

She said, which is proof of the close relationship between our two countries. Bangladesh-India relations are constantly advancing at a fast pace. The Prime Minister said she had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they discussed ways and means of cooperative relations between the two countries.

She invited Modi to visit Bangladesh at his convenience.
