There are more than 66,000 prisoners in the jails of the country who have been sentenced for various crimes and arrested on various charges. Meanwhile, the prisons have a capacity of about 43,000. According to the information given by the prison department, there are 23 thousand excess prisoners in the prisons of the country.

Assistant Inspector General of Prisons (Administration) Md. Mainuddin Bhuiyan told Barta24.com that till today (April 16) we have a total of 66 thousand 326 people in prison across the country. Among them 63 thousand 685 are men and 2 thousand 641 are women.

When asked about the capacity of the country's prisons, he said, "According to the number of prisoners, our capacity is very less." Our capacity is 42 thousand 866 people.

In response to the question about how the prisoners are in excess of the capacity, he said, our capacity cannot be increased suddenly. So we have to manage and keep the prisoners. According to international standards, there should be 42 thousand 866 people. But many times it is seen that 4 people are supposed to be kept in one room due to the high number of prisoners, we are keeping 8 people there. What else is like the halls of the University! If there are more prisoners then we manage them. Our capacity is slowly increasing. Someday we will also fulfill this capacity.

Earlier on Friday (April 12), BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid a courtesy call on the grave of Akram Hossain, Member Secretary of Upazila Jubo Dal who died in police custody of Thakurgaon District.

At that time, he said, only Akram's incident is not new. 30 activists were killed during our movement. About 60 lakh false cases have been filed against us. 700 to 800 leaders and workers have gone missing In the last few days they have arrested 27 thousand activists They have turned the whole country into a torture factory.

However, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has falsified the information given by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam. He also commented that Mirza Fakhrul will have to apologize to the nation for lying if he does not provide proper proof of this claim.

In a press conference called at the political office of the Awami League president in Dhanmondi on Monday (April 15) afternoon, Obaidul Quader said that most of the leaders and activists of the BNP are in jail. It was 20 thousand and now it is 60 lakh how? Let the list of 60 lakh prisoners be published immediately. Otherwise, Mirza Fakhrul should apologize to the nation for lying.
