How many buttons in Mujib Coat?

Dhaka: The black time-winning coat with the arms cut off, high-neck and two pockets in lower part is called Mujib Coat. The architect of independent Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman used to wear this coat.

The coat is equally popular to the politicians of the modern age. It is now recognized as an iconic honor; especially the Awami League leaders wear the Mujib Coat as part of their leader’s ideology and tradition. Besides, the young generation wears the coat with its different styles.   

The demand of the coat with five visible buttons is always. There are different opinions about number of buttons of the coat but it is mostly visible five buttons on the Mujib Coat.            

Many claimed that Sheikh Mujib used to wear the coat with six buttons, which relating to the Six-point charter of 1966. But, close relation to Bangabandhu and senior Awami League leaders claimed that there was no relation between Mujib Coat and Six-point charter.

On the other hand, almost the same coat was introduced from Jawaharlal Nehru. Almost all the Mujib coats were made for the senior Awami Leaders in Chattogram from Khwaja Tailors. Shahed Selim, proprietor the tailors, said he always makes the coat with five buttons. “Nobody raises question about it,” he said.

Shahed Selim said recently some customers demand to make the coat with six buttons and it has a symbol of six-point charter. “Then I searched in the Internet and saw many photographs of Bangabandhu where it was seen the coat with five buttons,” he said.

Many veteran leaders of Chattogram made Mujib Coat with five buttons. The Mujib Coat with five buttons were made for all the leaders, including former Presidium Member of Awami League and one of the main organizer of Liberation War late Ataur Rahman, former mayor of Chattogram Mohiuddin Chowdhury and incumbent mayor AZM Nasir, he went saying.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed saw Bangabandhu very closely. He was one of the main chief responsible among four of Mujib Bahini and later he performed duty as political secretary to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He told barta24.com that “there is no relation between Mujib Coat and Six-point”. Sheikh Mujib used to wear a little bit short-typed coat with five buttons.  

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has lot of Mujib coats and he wears these in all functions of the party. It is clearly seen that he is wearing the coat with five buttons. Young politicians of the party are wearing even the coat where five buttons.

Finally, the coats of Sajeeb Wazed Joy, grandson of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, former Awami Swechhasebak Bahini Abdur Rzaak’s Son lawmaker Nahim Razzak and many young leaders, are seen with five buttons.
