Commenting that the interim government will not interfere even an inch with the freedom of journalists, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Shafiqul Alam, said that the current government has not interfered with any journalist or any newspaper in the slightest, and will not do so because the government believes in independent media and free journalism.

He said this at a meeting titled 'Role of the Media in Building a New Bangladesh' at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Saturday (December 14) afternoon.

Shafiqul Alam said, we went through a terrible time from July 14 to August 5. We were in a state of trauma. They did whatever they wanted to shut our mouths. Many worked as their brokers. They brokered while doing journalism. Many journalists could not fight the oil war with the dictatorship. If there is less oil, we are out. We have spent 15 years like this, said the Press Secretary.

Without saying that he wants any journalist to be injured, Shafiqul Alam said, he wants a Bangladesh where no media worker is injured. Those who run newspapers have a big responsibility. The owners do not provide adequate safety equipment to journalists. No one takes the risk that foreign journalists take to cover news.

Those who run newspapers and those who are sent on the road should be given safety gear, otherwise they should protest, the Press Secretary has advised.

He also said that no reporter should have to cover news without safety gear. Everyone in Bangladesh should cover every incident in a risk-free way.

Shafiqul Alam said that the work of the interim government is to ensure freedom of press, speech, association. We will not interfere with anyone's freedom even an inch. Such freedom has not been seen in the history of Bangladesh. No one can say that we have bothered anyone in a news case. Many people say that cases are being filed in our time, but go and see if any of us are involved in it.

The Press Secretary of the Chief Adviser said that the accreditation cards of many journalists have been dropped, and that is being reviewed.
