Bangabandhu's Family Security Act Repeal Ordinance Promulgated

An ordinance has been issued canceling the 'Protection of Family Members of the Father of the Nation Act 2009' made for the protection of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's family members.

The President issued the repeal ordinance on Monday (September 9).

Before this, the draft of the ordinance was given final approval in the Advisory Council meeting on August 29.

It is said that, as per the decision of the previous government, the 'Father of the Nation Family Members Security Act- 2009 (Act No. 63 of 2009) was framed and promulgated. Later on May 15, 2015, a gazette was issued to provide special security and facilities as per the said Act. The act was made to give state special benefits only to members of a family which was a clear discrimination.

It also said that after the anti-discrimination student uprising, the current Interim government has taken a strong commitment to eliminate all discrimination. It is necessary to take immediate action and issue an ordinance to repeal the Act as the Parliament is absent.

In this context, in the Advisory Council meeting, the draft of the 'Security of Family Members of the Father of the Nation (Repeal) Ordinance-2024' was finally approved subject to the vetting of the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department.

Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and fled to India on August 5, the day of the 'March to Dhaka' program called by the anti-discrimination student movement. The cabinet was dissolved. On August 6, the President dissolved the 12th Jatiya Sangsad. Later on August 8, the Interim government was formed.
