The chief advisor of the interim government Dr. Muhammad Yunus is in charge of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources. He replaced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and State Minister Nasrul Hamid, who were deposed in the student movement.
The Chief Advisor holds 27 ministries besides power. It is expected that 2 more advisers may leave some ministries from 27 after taking oath.
Since independence, 51 ministers, advisers and state ministers have served in the Ministry of Power and Energy and Mineral Resources. From that point of view, Dr. Muhammad Yunus is ranked 52nd.
When the government was formed in 2008, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina kept the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources in her hands. Served as a minister from January 6, 2009 to the last day of power (October 5, 2024). Ad. Shamsul Alam Tuku and Mohammad Enamul Haque served for about 4 and half years as State Ministers.
And Nasrul Hamid has made a record of serving as the State Minister for a long time. He served from January 6, 2014 to August 5, 2024. Before that, no one has served as a Minister of State for such a long time in this ministry. During that time, 100% electrification of the country was ensured.
Captain (retd) Nurul Haque holds the record for the shortest tenure. He served only 7 days in 1980. And in 1996, Ali Ahmad Bir Bikram was in charge of the minister for 11 days.
In the first cabinet, Professor Md. Yusuf Ali was in charge of this ministry (29 December 1971 to 12 January 1972), then Khandaker Mushtaq Ahmed was in charge of the minister from 13 January 1972 to 13 April 1972. Minister Dr. Mofiz Chowdhury's tenure was from 13 April 1972 to 16 March 1973. After that, Khandaker Mushtaq Ahmed returned to the responsibility of the ministry. During this phase, he served from March 16, 1973 to January 19, 1974.
Abdur Rab Serniabat took charge as the Minister on February 19, 1974. The next year, he was in charge till January 26, 1975. At the same time, KM Obaidur Rahman served as the State Minister. His tenure was from 4 December 1973 to 8 July the following year. Dr. Kamal Hossain was appointed minister on 26 January 1975; he served till 15th August 1975.
Dewan Farid Gazi served as Minister of State in Khandaker Mushtaq's cabinet. He served only for 2 months and 16 days (from August 20, 1975 to November 6 of the same year). At the same time, Momin Uddin Ahmed served as the State Minister.
Air Vice Marshal MG Toab was appointed as the first advisor. His tenure was from 10 November 1975 to 3 May 1976. Then Commodore Mosharraf Hossain Khan, Ashfaq Hossain Khan, BM Abbas AT came as advisors. BM Abbas AT was sworn in as a minister on July 4, 1978 after a series of advisories. He served until April 15, 1979. Then AZM Enayet Ullah Khan was the minister for 3 months respectively. Colonel (Retd.) Akbar Hossain served for 6 months. Captain (Retd.) Nurul Haque served only for 7 days.
From 15th April 1979 to 2nd January 1980, the then Deputy Prime Minister Maudud Ahmed was in charge. Sunil Kumar Gupta served as State Minister with him. From January 2, 1980 to November 27, 1981, Kazi Anwarul Haque and LK Siddiqui were in charge of the Minister and State Minister respectively. AKM Maidul Islam was the minister for 1 month and 10 days. Sunil Kumar Gupta served as the state minister for 4 months from 27 November 1981. Then Air Vice Marshal Sultan Mahmud served as an adviser for 1 year and 9 months. He later served as a minister for 6 months (11 December 1983 to 1 June 1984). For the next 6 months, the minister was SM Shafiul Azam, the State Minister was Sunil Kumar Gupta. Major General Muhammad Munim was the minister for 2 months.
For the first time, Anwar Hossain Manju served as a minister for a long time. He took charge on March 25, 1985 and served till March 27, 1988. Zafar Imam served as the state minister for 2 months under him. Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu was the minister from 19 July 1989 to 6 December 1990. Professor Waheed Uddin Ahmed served as an adviser during the caretaker government in 1990. When BNP formed the government, Khaleda Zia kept the ministry in her hands. State Minister was Dr. Khandkar Mosharraf Hossain. After a few days Dr. Khandkar Musharraf was made a full minister and served the entire term.
After the one-sided election on February 15, 1996, Ali Ahmad Bir Bikram was in charge of the ministry for 11 days. Then during the caretaker government Jamilur Reza Chowdhury acted as adviser. After winning the election, Awami League appointed former army chief Mohammad Nuruddin Khan as a minister. He served till March 29, 1998. Besides him, Professor Rafiqul Islam served as the State Minister.
AKM Amanul Islam Chowdhury as advisor during caretaker government. When BNP came to government, AKM Mosharraf Hossain was given the responsibility of State Minister. He was removed on charges of corruption on 18 June 5 and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku was made the Minister of State. He served for 7 months and then Anwarul Kabir Talukdar was the State Minister for 4 months. First Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury, then Major General Rahul Alam Chowdhury, and finally Tapan Chowdhury served as advisers during the period of 1-11.
